WBPSC Preliminary Exam Pattern

  • The Preliminary Exam is an objective-type exam consisting of multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
  • The exam consists of one paper only, i.e., General Studies.
  • The duration of the WBPSC exam is 2 hours.
  • The exam is conducted for a total of 200 marks.
  • There is a negative marking of 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer.

WBPSC Mains Exam Pattern:

  • The WBCS Mains Exam consists of six compulsory papers and one optional subject consisting of two papers.
  • The six compulsory papers are:
    • Paper I: Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali (Compulsory)
    • Paper II: English (Compulsory)
    • Paper III: General Studies-I
    • Paper IV: General Studies-II
    • Paper V: The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of Reserve Bank of India
    • Paper VI: Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning
  • Two optional papers are-
  • Paper VII: Optional Subject – Paper I
  • Paper VIII: Optional Subject – Paper II
  • Each paper is of 200 marks.
  • The duration of each paper is 3 hours.
  • The optional subject is meant to be taken by candidates opting for Group A and Group B services.
  • For Group C & D, shortlisted candidates will have to give only six compulsory papers in Mains
  • Out of the six compulsory papers, four are of MCQ Type.

1.What are the stages of the WBPSC Exam 2025?
The WBPSC Exam 2025 has three stages:
Preliminary Examination: Objective type (Multiple-Choice Questions - MCQ).
Main Examination: A combination of Conventional (Descriptive) and Objective (MCQ) type papers.
Personality Test (Interview).

2.What is the pattern of the WBPSC Prelims 2025?
The Preliminary Examination will now consist of two papers of objective type (MCQ), both carrying 200 marks each, for a total of 400 marks. The duration for each paper is 2 hours.
Paper I: General Studies I (200 Marks)
Paper II: General Studies II (CSAT) (200 Marks)
Is the Prelims Paper II (CSAT) mandatory, and is it counted for merit?
Paper II (CSAT) is mandatory but is of a qualifying nature. Candidates must score a minimum of 33% in this paper. The marks from the Preliminary Examination are not counted for the final merit list; it is a screening test to select candidates for the Main Examination.

3.Is there negative marking in the Prelims?
Yes, there is negative marking for incorrect answers in the Prelims.

4.How many papers are there in the WBPSC Mains 2025?
The Main Examination consists of 10 papers.

5.What is the marking scheme for the Mains examination?
Each of the 10 papers carries 250 marks (or 300 marks in some references, but 250 is indicated in the latest scheme for merit papers).
The Qualifying Language Papers (Bengali/Nepali and English) carry 300 marks each and require a minimum of 30% to pass. These marks are not counted for the final merit.
The 8 Merit-Counting Papers (6 Compulsory + 2 Optional) carry 250 marks each.

6.What is the format of the Compulsory Papers in Mains?
Paper A (Language) and Paper B (English): Conventional/Descriptive (Qualifying).
Paper I (English Essay) and Paper II (Tradition and Culture of Bengal): Conventional/Descriptive (Merit-counting).
Paper III, IV, V, and VI (General Studies, Constitution & Economy, Arithmetic & Reasoning): Objective Type (MCQ) (Merit-counting).

7. How many marks does the Personality Test carry?
The marks for the Personality Test vary according to the Group of Service:
Group 'A' & 'B': 200 Marks
Group 'C': 150 Marks
Group 'D': 100 Marks

8. How is the final merit list prepared?
The final merit list is prepared based on the total marks obtained in the Main Examination (Merit-Counting Papers) and the Personality Test.
