CUET UG GAT and Language Exam 2026: FAQs

What are the CUET sections for English Language and GAT?

The English Language is part of Section I (Languages), and the General Aptitude Test (GAT) is Section III.

Is the General Aptitude Test (GAT) mandatory for all courses?

No, the GAT is not mandatory for all courses. It is compulsory only for specific programs like BBA, BMS, B.Voc., and certain B.A. programs, as required by the admitting university (e.g., DU, BHU, etc.).

What subjects are covered in the GAT Syllabus?

The GAT syllabus includes General Knowledge (Static GK), Current Affairs, General Mental Ability (Reasoning), Numerical Ability (basic Math up to Class 8 level), Quantitative Reasoning, and Logical & Analytical Reasoning.

What is the main focus of the English Language Section?

The English Language section primarily tests Reading Comprehension (Factual, Narrative, Literary passages), Verbal Ability (Para Jumbles, Synonyms, Antonyms), Vocabulary, and Grammar.

How many questions are in the English and GAT sections?

Both the English Language and the GAT sections contain 50 questions each, of which a candidate must attempt 40 questions (though the latest NTA updates suggest all 50 questions might be compulsory, candidates must check the final notification).

What is the time limit for each of these sections?

Both the English Language and the GAT sections are allotted 60 minutes each for completion.

Is there negative marking in the English and GAT sections?

Yes, there is negative marking. For every correct answer, you get +5 marks, and for every incorrect answer, 1 mark is deducted. Unattempted questions receive zero marks.

Is the GAT score used for admission to non-science domain subjects?

Yes, in CUET 2025, for certain discontinued domain subjects (like Entrepreneurship, Legal Studies, etc.), admission will now be based on the score obtained in the General Aptitude Test (GAT).

Can I skip the GAT if my desired course only asks for Domain subjects?

Yes, if the specific university and course (e.g., B.Sc. in Physics at DU) explicitly require only a Language and Domain Subjects, you can skip the GAT to reduce your subject load. Always verify the program-specific eligibility criteria.

Does the English Language test contain questions based on Class 12 NCERTs?

Unlike the Domain Subjects (Section II), the English Language test does not strictly follow the Class 12 NCERT curriculum. It is a general proficiency test focused on fundamental grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
