Every year, the Staff Selection Commission administers the stenographer exam. Candidates are selected through an All India level examination for stenographer Grade C (non-gazetted post) and Grade D posts in many departments, ministries, and organizations of the Indian government.

SSC Stenographer Eligibility Criteria 2026
(a)Nationality: A candidate must be:
(i) a citizen of India, or
(ii) a subject of Bhutan, or
(iii) a subject of Nepal, or
(iv) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia, and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
As long as the candidate falls under category (ii), (iii), (iv), or (v) above, they must be someone in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been given by the Government of India.
(b) SSC Stenographer Age limit & Age Relaxation 2026 (As on 01-08-2026)
The prescribed age limit under SSC Stenographer Recruitment is described below.
For Stenographer Grade C
Minimum age limit: 18 years
Maximum age limit: 30 years
A SSC Stenographer candidate must have been born not earlier than 02.08.1996 and not later than 01.08.2008 (both dates inclusive).
For Stenographer Grade D
Minimum age limit: 18 years
Maximum age limit: 27 years
