Heavy Water

HEAVY WATER

Heavy water (D2O) is a type of water in which the hydrogen atoms are replaced with the deuterium isotope of hydrogen.

Heavy water has a slightly higher boiling point and density than normal water due to the increased mass of the deuterium atom.

Heavy water is used in nuclear reactors as a neutron moderator to slow down neutrons and increase the probability of nuclear fission. It is also used in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as a solvent and deuterium oxide diluent.
