ALPHABET TEST

Different types of alphabet test are:

Type I: General Alphabetical Series

A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

Example:      Which letter would be the seventh to the right of the eleventh letter from the right end of the alphabet?

1. K

4. U
5. None of these

(i) Subtract the numbers if both the directions are same

(ii) Add the numbers if the directions are opposite.

For example, in the questions above you have to find the seventh letter to the right of the eleventh letter from the right. Since, both directions are same (right, right) we subtract 7 from 11. Hence the answer would be 4th from the right, i.e. W.

TIPS:   It is very useful if you memorize all the position of the letters in the alphabet by heart. You should also memorize their reverse positions.

Type II: Random Alphabetical Series

Example:      How many P’s are immediately preceded by M but not immediately followed by N in the following series:

Type III: Alphabetical order of words

In this type of questions some words are given as answer choices and you have to state which of the word would appear first, or second or third etc. in the directions.

Example:      Arrange the words in the alphabetical order and tick the one that come second last.

4. Eager
5. Entomology

Answer:       In this question, usually the first letter or the first two letters are same in all the words. So first of all, quickly see how many letters are common to all the words. Now, take the next letter of all the words. Reject the letter which does not suit the requirement. So answer is 5) Entomology.

Type IV: Letter-gap problems

Example:      How many pairs of letters are there in the word NECESSARY which has as many letters between them in the word as there are between them in the alphabet and in the same order?

1. One
2. Two
3. Three
4. Nil
5. Four

Answer:       Clearly, such a letter pair is N and S. In the word NECESSARY, they have four letters between them – E, C, E and S. In the alphabet too, N and S have four letters between them – O, P, Q and R. Hence, the correct answer is (1).

Tips: You can solve this problem the quickest if you remember the positions of all the letters correctly and you can remember them immediately. Once you do that you can solve these questions very quickly.

Type V: Word formation

Example:      If it is possible to form a word with the first, fourth, seventh and eleventh letters in the word ‘SUPERFLUOUS’ , write the first letter of that word. Otherwise, X is the answer.

Answer:       The first, fourth, seventh and eleventh letters are: S, E, L and S. Clearly a word LESS can be formed with these. The first letter of this word is L, hence (2) is the answer.

Type VI: Rule detection

In this type of alphabet test certain rule is given.

Example:      Which of the following series observed the rule “skip in between adjacent letters, increasing one letter more each time to build a set of letters”?

Answer:       We may analyze the given letter series as follows:

Tips: Answer=Total number of alphabets + number of letter those which have been not reversed + 1 – number of letters required.

Example:      Which letter will be 14th to the right of 6th letter from the left?

Tips: Answer=Total number of alphabets + number of letter those which have been not reversed + 1 – number of letters required.

Example:      Which letter will be 6th to the left to 24th letter from the left?

Tips: Answer=Total number of alphabets + number of letter those which have been not reversed + 1 – number of letters required.

Example:      Which letter will be 11th to the right of 24th letter from the right?

Example:       Which letter will be 4th to the left of 7th letter from the right?
